Defence demands to report on investigation into case of interference in Khadija Ismayilova's private life

On March 1, Yalchin Imanov, an advocate of journalist Khadija Ismayilova, sent an official letter to Aziz Seidov, Prosecutor of Baku, in connection with the fact of the instalment of a hidden surveillance camera in the Khadija Ismayilova's apartment and the use of video records to blackmail the journalist.

On September 1 the Baku Court of Grave Crimes convicted Ismayilova and sentenced her to 7.5 years in prison. The journalist was found guilty of illegal entrepreneurship, tax evasion, misappropriation, embezzlement and abuse of power. The defence appealed against the sentence. On November 25, the Baku Court of Appeal (BCA) dismissed the complaint of Khadija Ismayilova and upheld the verdict of guilty.

"In March 2012, video records concerning the private life of Khadija Ismayilova were posted on the Internet," Yalchin Imanov has reminded the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent. According to him, the "story gave rise to a public resonance and a wave of indignation." "After that, the Baku Prosecutor's Office has instituted a criminal case. Khadija Ismayilova was granted the victim status," the advocate has added.

However, later, according to Yalchin Imanov, then criminal proceedings were suspended. Meanwhile, Khadija Ismayilova and her defence had not been notified about the suspension.

"So, I have addressed the Prosecutor of Baku and requested to give us a copy of the decision to suspend the investigation and inform us in details about the activities carried out and the investigative actions," said Yalchin Imanov.

According to the advocate, he has appealed to the Prosecutor's Office in order to actualize the case, since the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has started communication on the Khadija Ismayilova's complaint about interference in her private life and discredit of her in the media.
