CPJ calls on to release Khadija Ismayilova

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) named nine female journalists placed into custody for their professional activities. Among them, there is the Azerbaijani Khadija Ismayilova.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the journalist Khadija Ismayilova became famous for her investigations of facts of corruption in higher echelons of power in Azerbaijan. She was presented by a number of economic charges – of illegal entrepreneurship, misappropriation, etc. On September 1, 2015, a Baku court sentenced her to 7.5 years in prison.

According to CPJ, 199 journalists around the world are in jails for their professional activities, and nine of them are women.

It is noted that women journalists face additional risk in comparison with their male colleagues – the gender "traditions" make them more vulnerable. When Ismayilova started her anti-corruption investigations and criticized the Azerbaijani authorities, a video with the details of her intimate life was anonymously posted on the Internet, says the website of the CPJ.

In April 2013, Khadija Ismayilova became one of the ten winners of the contest "Hero of the Caucasus-2012", conducted by the "Caucasian Knot".

The court ruling, which awarded Madin Gubzhokov compensation of 30,000 roubles for unlawful criminal prosecution, is incomparable with the moral harm caused by the actions of Azamat Kyaov, a former law enforcer. The amount is ridiculous and should be appealed against, lawyers and human rights defenders have stated.
