In Yerevan, more than 5000 people gather for action in memory of victims of Armenian Genocide
In Yerevan, activists have started a rally in memory of victims of the Armenian Genocide. According to the organizers, after the rally, more than 5000 people who attend the event will march as a torchlight procession through the city centre.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that residents of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh and members the Armenian Diasporas treat the date of April 24 as the Day of memory of victims of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire in 1915-1923.
The today's event to mark the anniversary of the Armenian Genocide was organized by activists of the "Young Wing" of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) Party.
People who came to the rally brought with them torches and candles, Armenian national flags, and flags of the countries which had recognized the Armenian Genocide. Furthermore, the activists unfolded a huge flag of Nagorno-Karabakh "as a sign of the unity of all Armenians with Karabakh."
On April 2, the situation in the Karabakh conflict zone was escalated. The parties to the conflict were engaged in combat actions with the use of tanks, multiple launch rocket systems, and aircrafts. On April 5, the sides to the conflict declared a truce; however, they periodically accuse each other of violation of agreements on ceasefire.
According to one of the organizers of the rally, the march is directed against the attempts to deny the Armenian Genocide.
