Sochi authorities refuse to grant housing to former prisoner of Nazi concentration camps

On May 10, 89-year-old Nina Ivanovna Kurilo, a former underage prisoner of Nazi concentration camps and the widow of a war veteran, received a refusal to her request to grant her an apartment in a social house for veterans and disabled people. According to the woman, she cannot live in an old ramshackle house without sewage system, where the water supply is constantly switched off.

Nina Kurilo asked the Sochi administration to grant her a one-room separate apartment with modern conveniences in a social house for war veterans.

On the eve of the 71st anniversary of the Victory, Nina Kurilo received a response to her request, which came from the Department for Social Policy of the Sochi administration and was signed by Galina Pushkar, the chief of the Department. According to the response, Nina Kurilo cannot be included in the category of citizens who are entitled to be granted living accommodation in a specialized housing reserve of the system for social services for the population.

"The privileged categories of citizens are eligible for allocation of housing, especially because of plenty of housing built in Sochi. A 90-year-old person cannot and should not visit offices to argue that he or she needs help... It is clear that a 90-year-old person cannot stand in a queue because of his or her age. Therefore, the policy of the Sochi authorities and their refusal to improve the living conditions of the privileged categories of citizens fail to comply with the federal policy and the Federal Law 'On Veterans'," commented on the situation Roman Klykov, an advocate from Sochi.
