Baku police release oppositionist Turgut Gambar

Turgut Gambar, a board member of the youth movement “Nida”, was released after a four-hour stay at the police station with a warning.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that today in Baku, near the building of the Court of Appeal (CoA), which was to consider the appeal complaint against the arrest of the “Nida” activist Elgiz Gakhramanov, Turgut Gambar and Ismi Shakhzade, members of the board of the movement, were detained as well as journalists Aitadj Akhmedova and Ilgar Veliev, who videoed the detention of Gambar and Shakhzade. The police released the journalists after destructing the video, and Ismi Shakhzade – after taking him long away from the courthouse.

The detainee Turgut Gambar was taken to the Chief Department of the Baku Police, as Ulvi Gasanli, another board member of the “Nida”, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

According to his story, a group of “Nida” activists and journalists gathered at the police building.

"We stood there waiting for the police to clarify Turgut’s fate. At about 4:10 p.m., Turgut called us and told that he was already at large," said Gasanli.

According to Turgut Gambar, he was released with a warning.

"In fact, they threatened me with arrest; of course, we don’t deal with any anti-state activity. Today, we just stood in front of the courthouse, as we usually do, when they try activists in court. That is, it wasn’t a protest action," Mr Gambar said.
