International observers demand re-voting at some stations in Georgia

The Joint International Election Observation Mission, whose members visited 200 polling stations for the election to the Parliament of Georgia on October 8, have stated the need to hold a re-run of elections in Zugdidi and Marneuli, casting doubt on the accuracy of vote tabulation there.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on October 8 Georgia elected its MPs. Six electoral blocs and 19 parties took part in the race; and at least 300 violations were fixed by NGO observers.

"While most of these irregularities would not seriously influence the result, the Mission recommends that there should be a re-run of the elections in the polling stations No. 79 in the Zugdidi district and No. 48 in Marneuli, as the disturbances there place the validity of the ballot in question," says the Mission’s statement, released on October 9 on the website of the Norwegian Helsinki Committee (NHC).

Its authors note that the overall assessment of the elections held in Georgia "will also be shaped by the way which the relevant electoral bodies deal with the many complaints made during the Election Day."
