Freedom House: verdict of guilty to Giyas Ibragimov demonstrates authorities' fear of society

The sentence pronounced against activist Giyas Ibragimov is based on the falsified charge, and it demonstrates the authorities' fear of any kind of dissent. This was stated by the human rights organization "Freedom House".

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on October 25, in Azerbaijan, the court sentenced activist Giyas Ibragimov to 10 years of imprisonment on the charge of drug trafficking. Meanwhile, Giyas Ibragimov was detained together with activist Bairam Mamedov after the appearance of graffiti: "Qul bayramınız mübarək!" (Congratulations on the slaves' holiday!) and "F ... k the system!" made on the pedestal of the monument to Geidar Aliev in Baku.

According to a release disseminated by the "Freedom House", 22-year-old Giyas Ibragimov is sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment on the falsified charge of illegal possession of drugs. Today, on October 26, the release has been available to the "Caucasian Knot".

"The government does not tolerate dissent or free expression of any kind, and it demonstrates its fear of public opinion," stated Robert Herman, Vice President for international programmes at the "Freedom House".
