Georgian authorities deny refugee status to Tums Abdurakhmanov, native of Chechnya
The Ministry for Refugees' Matters of Georgia refused to grant political asylum to the 31-year-old resident of Grozny Tums Abdurakhmanov, put in Russia on the federal wanted list. This decision was made on October 31.
The Ministry has justified its decision by saying that "there are substantial grounds to believe that, due to significant circumstances, the presence of Abdurakhmanov in the country is contrary to its interests."
According to Abdurakhmanov, he is in Georgia since November 8, 2015. He argues that he had to leave Chechnya for Georgia "after threats expressed by a high-ranking relative of the head of Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov," and "fabrication of a criminal case against him on participation in foreign illegal armed formations (IAFs) in Syria."
