Volgograd demonstrators call to toughen punishment for abusing animals

This call was announced by protesters at a rally in Volgograd, organized within the All-Russian campaign of zoo-defenders.

The today's rally was organized by the organization to help stray pets named "Do good!" According to the organizers, it was attended by at least 200 people – mostly volunteers involved in helping stray animals.

The protest campaign was preceded by a resonance incident in Khabarovsk, which became known as "the case of Khabarovsk girls-flayers". According to investigators, two 17-year-old girls from Khabarovsk systematically tortured and killed animals, taken from the pets' shelter, and then posted photos of tortured and lacerate animals in social networks.

"Today, we collected signatures to the appeal to punish the 'Khabarovsk girls-flayers' and to add the law with respective provisions, namely: to toughen Article 245 of the Russian Criminal Code (cruelty to animals)," Yana Vodolazhskaya, the organizer of the action, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

She clarified that the campaign is all-Russian; and similar tallies took place today in 97 Russian cities. The appeals and signatures collected within the framework of the campaign will be sent to the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF) and Russian President.
