Resident of Gudermes sentenced for attempt to join IS

In Chechnya, the court has found a local man guilty of trying to leave for Syria to join the terrorist organization "Islamic State" (IS), banned in Russia. The defendant was sentenced to two years of imprisonment.

According to investigators, in November 2015, Iles Alapaev, a resident of Gudermes, tried to leave for Syria, but was detained by border guards. This was told to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent by the spokesman of the Investigating Department for Chechnya of the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF).

"Iles Alapaev has pleaded guilty. The court has pronounced the decision to sentence the defendant to two years of imprisonment in a common-security penal colony, followed by restriction of freedom for a period of one year," said the spokesman of the ICRF's Investigating Department for Chechnya.

One of the relatives of the sentenced man treats the verdict as too severe.

"At our place, people are sentenced to 3.5 years of imprisonment for involvement in the war in Syria. Meanwhile, he was sentenced to two years of imprisonment in a penal colony," said the defendant's relative.
