Editor of Azerbaijani website accused of assaulting woman

Afgan Sadygov, the founder and editor of the website "azel.tv", having social and political orientation, has been arrested in the Jalilabad District of Azerbaijan. He is accused of assaulting a woman.

The journalist was arrested on November 22 in the Gazakh District in Western Azerbaijan and brought to Jalilabad, his mother Ulnisa Sadygova told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent. According to her story, the local court ruled to arrest him for three months.

The mother believes that her son is persecuted for his professional journalistic activities. "My son has been running his website for many years on his own and covered facts of lawlessness and injustice in it. He was warned several times and ordered to stop critical publications against local authorities. They wanted only laudatory materials from him, but he didn't agree," said Ulnisa Sadygova.

A few weeks ago, Afgan Sadygov was summoned to the executive power of the Jalilabad District. "There, some woman attacked him with a cry and made noise; it was documented immediately; and now they opened a criminal case asserting that my son had attacked her," Ms Sadygova said.
