SHRC put on registry of foreign agents

The decision to include the Krasnodar-based public organization "Southern Human Rights Centre" (SHRC) on the registry of foreign agents has been made on the outcomes of the check, the Russia's Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has reported.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the SHRC was established in 2012 and is engaged in "conducting public monitoring, and dissemination of reliable information on human rights and citizen's freedom violations." In August 2016, the SHRC reported a mass hunger strike of migrants in Sochi, but the prosecutor's office has refuted this information.

The Sochi rights defender Semyon Simonov, who was nominated for the contest of the "Caucasian Knot" "Hero of the Caucasus-2013", is the Chairman of the SHRC. Its Board also includes Svetlana Gannushkina, the Chair of the "Civil Assistance" Committee; Andrei Yurov, a member of the Human Rights Council (HRC); and Yulia Naberezhnaya, the Deputy Chairman of the Coordination Ecological Council under the Sochi Mayor, says the website of the SHRC.

"The fact of compliance of the SHRC to the features of a non-profit organization performing the functions of a foreign agent has been established in the course of the unscheduled documentary check, conducted by the MoJ's Department for the Krasnodar Territory," says the website of the MoJ.
