Makhachkala residents criticize museum in city park

The Dagestani weekly "Chernovik" has invited Makhachkala residents to an excursion in the Lenin Komsomol Park to draw their attention to the authorities' decision to build a museum there. Environmentalists and social network users agree that a wrong place was chosen for the museum.

The excursion was triggered by the plan "to cut off the most developed part of the park, where it is planned to build the Museum of Russia," Mairbek Agaev, the editor-in-chief of the "Chernovik" told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent. He believes that it is quite easy to find another place for the museum in the city.

Preservation of the greenery is one of the most crucial problems for Makhachkala, said Gayirbeg Abdurakhmanov, Director of the Institute for Ecology and Sustainable Development of the Dagestani State University.

In 2009, Makhachkala was recognized to be one of the most polluted cities in Russia.

The order to create the museum was issued by the Republic's Government on November 15, 2016. It treats the project as a Non-Profit Fund "Russia – My History. City of Makhachkala"; while the Republic's Ministry of Construction, the organization named "Russian 'Znanie' Society" and the Fund of Humanitarian Projects are listed among the project founders.

According to the press service of the Mayoralty, the erection of the museum violates no city regulations. Besides, in 2017, the Mayoralty promises to create four new green areas.
