CoA upholds verdict to “Nida” activist Mamedov
The Baku Court of Appeal (CoA) has dismissed the appeal of Bairam Mamedov, an activist of the “Nida” Movement, sentenced to 10 years in prison. His defence is preparing a cassation.
The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on November 8, 2016, the court found Mamedov guilty of large-scale drug dealing.
According to the advocate Elchin Sadygov, at Mamedov’s detention, his right to defence was violated, as law enforces did not allow him to invite an advocate of choice from the very beginning.
Farman Mamedov, Bairam’s father, has treated the CoA’s decision as expected.
Let us note here that on November 9, 2016, on the following day after sentencing Mamedov, the US State Department and the foreign office of the European Union urged Azerbaijani authorities to review the cases of Giyas Ibragimov and Bairam Mamedov, stressing political motives in them.
