Victims of terror act in Beslan treat compensation awarded by ECtHR as symbolic
The decision pronounced by the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) in favour of relatives of the victims of the Beslan terror act is a victory. However, the awarded compensations will not be tangible for the state and will remain symbolic amounts. This opinion was voiced by Ella Kesaeva, the leader of the "Voice of Beslan".
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that today, it has become known that the ECtHR has recognized the violation of the rights of relatives of the people killed and injured in the seizure of the Beslan school in 2004 and awarded 409 complainants the compensation in the amount of 2,955,000 million euros and 88,000 euros to recover court costs.
On September 1, 2004, militants took 1128 people hostage in the Beslan School No. 1. The rescue operation was completed on September 3, 2004. The terror act killed 334 people, including 186 children. 810 people were injured.
The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent has been told by Ella Kesaeva, the leader of the public organization "Voice of Beslan", that the ECtHR's decision is surely a victory of the victims.
Meanwhile, according to Ella Kesaeva, the amount of compensation is not satisfactory.
"The European Court has very poorly assessed the human life. I personally expected that the decision should be not purely symbolic, but tangible for the state," stated the activist.
After the ECtHR's decision has been pronounced, the Russian Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has voiced the intention to challenge the verdict. According to Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the Russian President, the ECtHR's decision contains "absolutely unacceptable" formulations concerning the statement that the authorities had failed to take enough measures to prevent the terror act and save lives of the hostages.
