Court awards native of Dagestan with two years in colony for helping militant in Syria

The North-Caucasian District Military Court of Rostov-on-Don has sentenced Renat Abdurakhmanov, a resident of Dagestan, to two years in a high-security for giving money to a militant for leaving for Syria. The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent has learnt it at the court's press service.

"In May 2014, in the village of Kurush, Abdurakhmanov gave him 5000 roubles for going to Syria and joining an illegal armed formation (IAF), not envisioned by the law of that country there with the aims contrary to the interests of the Russian Federation." Besides, on July 31, 2014, Abdurakhmanov made a bank transfer of 90,000 roubles to the same person for taking part in the IAF," said the court's press service.

The investigators treat Abdurakhmanov's actions as financing terrorism.

"The court has also received the presentation of the Deputy Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation on the special order of the trial and sentencing, since Abdurakhmanov had concluded a pre-trial cooperation agreement," the press service has added.

  • Analysts assess Dagestani head’s statement on appeals of SMO fighters

The appeals of the participants of the special military operation (SMO) in Ukraine from Dagestan to republic’s authorities are caused by many local problems and remain one of the ways to attract officials’ attention.
