Since beginning of 2017, 48 people detained in Chechnya for trying to join IS

Since the beginning of 2017, in the territory of Chechnya, law enforcers detained 48 local residents who were going to leave for Syria to join militants of the terrorist organization "Islamic State" (IS), banned in Russia by the court's decision. This was reported by law enforcers.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that according to the law enforcement agencies, more than 600 natives of Chechnya may stay in the territory of Syria. Of them, more than 340 are on the international wanted list.

According to officials from the Chechen law enforcement agencies, mostly young people under their 25-30 years old are trying to leave for Syria.

The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told by an official from the law enforcement agencies that "the recruitment through social networks is the most common way to involve young people in the ranks of terrorist organizations."

In turn, local observers did not rule out that law enforcers themselves can act as recruiters from Syria. "Young people can be easily misled, and this fact is used not only by real, but also by pretended recruiters from the law enforcement agencies. Law enforcers can themselves provoke a man or a young woman to make a certain step and then present that as a result of their operational activities," the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told by a leader of one of the republican NGOs who preferred to remain anonymous.
