Residents of Chechnya complain about price increase on eve of Eid al-Fitr

In the markets of Chechnya, the prices for food products have significantly grown during the last days of the month of Ramadan. This was reported by local residents. The Chechen Mufti has called on sellers to take into account the interests of low-income believers and not raise prices till the celebration of the end of the fasting.

"If you take on average, then the prices for food, vegetables, fruits and other items have increased by at least 10-20 percent. And the prices can be even higher on the last day before the holiday. The price increase has been going on for several days already, for example, an average price for a chicken is 300 roubles, although earlier, you could easily buy it for 250 roubles," reported Aishat, a woman from Grozny.

Today, Chechen Mufti Salakh-Khaji Mezhiev has addressed the sellers at the markets with an appeal not to raise prices on the eve of Eid al-Fitr. "There are people in need among us who do not have the opportunity to buy food for high prices. Show mercy and compassion for all the people in need," said Salakh-Khaji Mezhiev in his appeal published today on the website of the Chechen Spiritual Administration of Muslims (SAM) for Chechnya.

According to Islam, the commission of good deeds during Ramadan significantly increases the reward for a believer, and the manifestation of excessive greed is unacceptable. This was told to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent by Shakhid, the imam of one of the mosques in Chechnya.

"In all Islamic countries, there is a tradition to reduce food prices on the eve of Eid al-Fitr, since not all Muslims can afford to buy expensive food products. However, at our place, many entrepreneurs raise prices accurately during the last days before the holiday, without even thinking about the fact that they commit sin before Allah," the imam explained.
