Opposition states adoption of "Ivanishvili's constitution" in Georgia
Today, the Georgian parliament has adopted, in the first reading, the draft amendments to the country's Constitution. The MPs plan to hold the second reading tomorrow, on June 23.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 22, by majority of votes, the State Constitutional Commission adopted the Draft Constitution of Georgia, according to which the president of the country would be elected by the election board.
According to Gigi Ugulava, the leader of the "European Georgia" Party, today, the MPs have adopted not the draft amendments, but the "constitution of Bidzina Ivanishvili." Mr Ugulava has stated this during a briefing in Tbilisi, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.
"The new constitution is the constitution of the oligarch Bidzina Ivanishvili and the 'Georgian Dream' Party. The ruling party is actually approving a new constitution. We are deprived of the right to elect our president and the right to participate in fair elections of MPs. The peasants are deprived of the right to sell their land and get a fair price for it," said Gigi Ugulava.
Giorgi Akhvlediani, one of the leaders of the non-parliamentary "United Democratic Movement" Party, said at the briefing that "after the adoption of the draft constitution by the parliament, the resource for the peaceful resolution of the problem is exhausted."
