Georgia students hold two-day protest on South-Ossetian border

A protest action held by students of the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University against the transfer of the borderline with South Ossetia lasted two days. It ended without incidents.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on July 8, more than 50 people lined up in a live chain on the road near the border village of Bershueti. In their hands, they were holding posters reading: "No occupation!", "Our land is our responsibility", and "Stop Russia!"

On July 4, the State Security Service (SSS) of Georgia accused South Ossetia of transferring a banner indicating the border. The banner was moved by about 500 meters, and thus about 10 hectares of land were lost. This was stated by residents of the village of Bershueti. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) called those claims a provocation.

By holding a protest, the young people wanted to draw public attention to the problem, the "InterPressNews" reports.

"The problem of creeping occupation concerns not only those people whose lands are on the territory de facto controlled by the authorities. This is a problem for the whole of Georgia," stated one of the protesters.

The security of the protesters was monitored by the police, the agency "News-Georgia" reports.
