"Beslan Mothers" ask ECtHR not to review recovery of compensations from Russia

Today, members of "Beslan Mothers" have appealed to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) with objections to the complaint lodged by the Russian Ministry of Justice (MoJ) concerning the recovery from Russia of more than three million euros in favour of relatives of those who perished and suffered from the terror attack on the Beslan School.

In ECtHR’s opinion, Russia failed to take all the necessary measures to investigate the circumstances of the terror act and the assault, during which hostages perished.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 13, the ECtHR recognized the violation of the rights of relatives of the people killed and injured during the seizure of the Beslan school in 2004. In total, 409 applicants were awarded compensations amounting to 2.955 million euros and additional 88,000 euros to reimburse the legal costs. The Russian Commissioner at the ECtHR appealed against this decision and blamed the ECtHR for using double standards.

Today, "Beslan Mothers" sent to the ECtHR by fax their objections to the Russian MoJ’s complaint, said Sergey Kniazkin, an advocate for "Beslan Mothers". The complaint treats reaction of "some Russia’s high-ranking officials" to the ECtHR’s decision as "hysterical", while the MoJ’s request to transfer the case to the ECtHR’s Grand Chamber – as "a cynical, cruel and offensive step."
