In Baku, Court releases Faig Amirov from custody (+video)

Today, the Baku Court of Appeal (BCA) has replaced the remaining term of imprisonment for Faig Amirov, the financial director of the opposition newspaper "Azadliq" with conditional sentence. Faig Amirov was released in the courtroom.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on July 24, Faig Amirov, the financial director of the newspaper "Azadliq" and the assistant to the chairman of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), was found guilty of inciting religious hatred and tax evasion. He was sentenced to three years and three months of imprisonment and a fine. At trial, Faig Amirov pleaded not guilty.

Today, the BCA has pronounced the decision to sentence Faig Amirov to conditional imprisonment, reported advocate Fakhraddin Mekhtiev.

"The Court has applied Article 70 of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan, allowing a suspended sentence. The BCA has pronounced the decision to replace the remaining part of the sentence, that is, two years and one month of imprisonment, with a suspended imprisonment with a trial period of three years. That means if Faig Amirov will commit a new crime within the period of three years, then two years and one month of imprisonment will be added to the punishment," Fakhraddin Mekhtiev said.
