Volgograd activist appeals against Mayoralty's refusal to sanction picket

Anatoly Eldyrkin, a member of the Volgograd Human Rights Council (HRC) and a participant in "Strategy-31" actions, has filed a lawsuit demanding to recognize illegal the Mayoralty's refusal to sanction a picket scheduled by activists for October 29.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the organizers of the October 29 action intended to commemorate victims of political repressions and demand from the authorities to respect the Russian Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. They also demanded fair elections, to stop pressure on civil society, release and rehabilitate all the unjustly imprisoned persons. The Volgograd Mayoralty has explained the refusal by some road works, pointing out also the absence of any other free platforms for holding public events.

The lawsuit has been submitted by Mr Eldyrkin to the Tsentralny District Court of Volgograd. The consideration of the lawsuit is scheduled for today, October 28. The claimant has added that other activists intend to come and support him.
