Use of marijuana decriminalized in Georgia
The Georgia's Constitutional Court (CC) has abolished criminal punishment for consumption of marijuana and cannabis, finding it an encroachment on the freedom to choose the type of rest and relaxation.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in October 2016, the CC declared unconstitutional deprivation of freedom for purchase and storage of marijuana for personal use, in case the weight of the drug does not exceed 70 grams. On December 24, this weight restriction was lifted.
The CCC has noted that the use of marijuana harms human health; however, criminal prosecution for this is incompatible with the principles of a free society.
Givi Shanidze, a member of the "Girchi" oppositional party, filed a lawsuit to the CC against the Georgian Parliament. The party has treated the CC's decision as historical.
"The CC has acknowledged that the human body belongs to the person him/herself," said Yago Khvichiya, a "Girchi" activists, the "Sputnik-Georgia" reports.
