USA put Kadyrov on sanctions list

The US Department of the Treasury has put Ramzan Kadyrov on the "Magnitsky" sanctions list, calling him responsible for extrajudicial executions, torture and other human rights violations in Chechnya.

The "Magnitsky Law", initially aimed against those whom the USA regarded responsible for the death of the lawyer Sergey Magnitsky, was expanded in December 2016. The "Magnitsky Global Law" covers corrupt officials and human rights violators in any country around the world, depriving them of the right to enter the USA, and of access to US financial institutions.

The US Treasury has added five Russian citizens to the sanctions list, including Ramzan Kadyrov, the head of Chechnya. They treat Mr Kadyrov "responsible for extrajudicial executions, acts of torture and other serious human rights violations," the Treasury has stated.

"Being the head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov controls his administrative subordinates, who are in charge of disappearances and extrajudicial killings," says the statement posted on the US Treasury's website today.
