Dagestani residents rally to stop demolition of houses
Residents of Makhachkala and Kaspiysk came to the building of Dagestani government demanding to stop the demolition of their houses, recognized as illegal constructions, or compensate for the cost of their apartments.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Makhachkala intensified the fight against illegal construction. In February 2018, the acting head of Dagestan, Vladimir Vasiliev, said that all illegally built houses in the city would be demolished.
Today, about 70 residents of multi-storey buildings gathered in the central square of Makhachkala and demanded to meet Mr Vasiliev. They protested against the demolition of their houses.
They are outraged by the fact that initially the authorities had sanctioned the construction of their houses; and the builders had all the required permits. People assert that they had checked the presence of all the necessary documents on the developers.
The demolition covers not only unfinished houses, but also those already inhabited. According to protesters' estimates, the demolition will make over 150 families homeless.
Seeing no officials' reaction to the rally, protesters decided to disperse, promising to bring more people to the square on June 7 and stating not to stop their actions until their demands are satisfied.
