Ganja Mayor wounded in armed attack

Elmar Veliev, the head of the Azerbaijani city of Ganja, was exposed to an armed attack. He and his bodyguard Gasym Ashbazov were hospitalized with wounds. The attacker was detained, law enforcers have reported.

An unknown person opened fire at Mayor Veliev and his bodyguard Ashbazov; they were hospitalized with wounds of varying severity; now, their health condition is satisfactory, says the joint press release of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), the General Prosecutor's Office (GPO) and the State Security Service (SSS) of Azerbaijan, disseminated on July 3 around the midnight.

The attacker was detained and disarmed by policemen; he is Yunis Safarov, a resident of Ganja, born in 1983, the press release specifies.

His motives are not reported.

Let us note here that Elmar Veliev is a brother of Khanlar Veliev, the Military Prosecutor of Azerbaijan.
