Two police officers killed during riots in Ganja

During the riots in Ganja, two police officers were killed, 40 people were detained, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) has reported.

On Tuesday, July 10, about 150-200 people gathered outside the administration building in Ganja in connection with the attempt on Elmar Veliev, the head of the city executive power. The rally demanded from law enforcers to investigate not only the attack on Veliev, but also his activities. The police suppressed the action, and there were clashes.

On July 3, Elmar Veliev was wounded in an armed attack. The shooter was detained and identified as the 35-year-old Yunis Safarov. Law enforcers called the attack a terror act.

According to the Azerbaijan MIA, "a group of radical religious persons attempted to violate public order" and "resisted the police."
