Rally in Kalmykia regards law on native languages unconstitutional

A rally against the bill on the voluntary study of native languages was held in Elista, the capital of Kalmykia, in parallel with the sports and entertainment events arranged by the Mayoralty in the same place. The participants of the rally treated the authorities' actions as an attempt to disrupt the rally.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on July 3, a rally in Elista demanded from the authorities to abandon the above bill on the voluntary study of national (native) languages at schools.

On Saturday, July 14, despite the police's warnings about the illegality of the rally, the protesters refused to disperse.

At the end of the rally, they adopted a resolution stating that "the draft law on the voluntary study of national languages is contradictory to the Constitution of the Russian Federation – the principle of nations' equal rights and self-determination."
