Relatives demand an urgent surgery for Mamed Ibragim

Mamed Ibragim, an adviser to the chair of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), went blind in prison to his left eye. He can completely lose his sight without immediate surgery, his relatives reported. The Azerbaijani Ombudsperson has requested the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) to provide medical treatment for Mamed Ibragim.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in March 2016, Mamed Ibragim was sentenced to three years of imprisonment on the charge of beating a man. Advocates claimed falsification of the case materials.

Mamed Ibragim needs an urgent surgery, his son Turan Ibragim told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent. "A month ago, my father went blind to his left eye. He is diagnosed with glaucoma. And now there is a threat of final blindness for him, since a similar process is going on in his right eye. On July 18, a specialist from the Eye Diseases Research Institute named after academician Zarifa Alieva examined the father in the penal colony. The doctor has said that my father should be urgently transported to their Institute for surgery, otherwise he faces a complete loss of sight," Turan Ibragim said.

The activist's family appealed to the MoJ and to the Ombudsperson. "Yesterday, we got a notification from the Ombudsperson's office stating that Ombudsperson Elmira Suleimanova had sent a letter to Rafail Mekhdiev, the head of the MoJ's Chief Medical Department. On the basis of our appeal, the Ombudsperson requests to examine and provide medical treatment for my father," Turan Ibragim said.
