Baku court leaves oppositionist Agil Magerramov in custody
The court in Baku has rejected the defence's motion to transfer Agil Magerramov, a member of the presidium of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), under house arrest. The defence intends to appeal against the refusal.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that along with Magerramov, on May 25, law enforcers detained Ruslan Nasirli, the chairman of the Mejlis of the youth committee of the PFPA, and Babek Gasanov, the head of one of the district organization of the party. The activists were arrested for four months.
According to Agil Layidjev, a Magerramov's advocate, the defence motivated the petition by stating that "the investigation can be conducted without keeping Magerramov behind bars."
"Agil Magerramov has not been tried before. He is accused of committing economic, not grave crimes," said the advocate.
