Political analysts forecast fight on corruption after election of the head of Dagestan

The political will to combat Dagestani corruption originates from the Kremlin, but it is not known to what extent this process will continue if Vladimir Vasiliev is elected the head of the republic, political analysts and journalists believe.

On July 24, the "Edinaya Rossiya" (United Russia) Party presented the candidacy of Vladimir Vasiliev, the acting head of Dagestan, for the post of head of Dagestan to the Russian president. The election will be held on September 9.

In the opinion of Akhmet Yarlykapov, a senior researcher at the Centre for Caucasian Problems and Regional Security of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (known as the MGIMO), the Kremlin has clearly outlined the course for direct control from the federal centre and the fight against corruption in Dagestan.

The war on corruption is supported by Dagestani residents, Albert Esedov, a political analyst, is sure.

Gadjimurad Sagitov, the editor-in-chief of the newspaper "Novoe Delo" (New Cause), has suggested that the need to form a proper team after Mr Vasiliev's election as the head of Dagestan may be an obstacle in the anti-corruption activities.
