Azerbaijani oppositionist goes on hunger strike in penal colony

Murad Adilov, an activist of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), is on hunger strike for the second day, protesting against the refusal to grant him the conditional early relief (CER), his relatives have stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 5, a court in Baku refused CER for Adilov.

Murad Adilov was detained in August 2014 on suspicion of possessing drugs. On May 14, 2015, he was sentenced to six years in prison. His brother, Natig Adilov, a columnist for the "Azadlyg" newspaper, has linked his brother's prosecution with his oppositional activities. After Murad's arrest, Natig emigrated.

"Murad protests against an unfair verdict and denial of CER," said Natig Adilov, adding that his brother has been in prison for five years, and he has serious health problems.

According to Natig, Murad Adilov is dissatisfied with the absence of attention to his case from international organizations and diplomats.

The human rights Amnesty International has put Murad Adilov on the list of political prisoners, promulgated in June 2016.

  • Compensation decrease for illegal prosecution violates rights of KBR resident

The court ruling, which awarded Madin Gubzhokov compensation of 30,000 roubles for unlawful criminal prosecution, is incomparable with the moral harm caused by the actions of Azamat Kyaov, a former law enforcer. The amount is ridiculous and should be appealed against, lawyers and human rights defenders have stated.
