25 people are still under arrest in Nalchik after disorders in Kendelen

Eight out of the 33 persons, detained on September 19 after the Kabardinian-Balkar conflict in the village of Kendelen, were released from the Nalchik temporary isolation facility, a member of the Public Oversight Commission (POC) of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR) has stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 18, residents of the Balkar village of Kendelen did not let the participants of the equestrian-pedestrian march held in memory of the 310th anniversary of the Kanjali Battle through their village, after which clashes took place. On September 19, activists and policemen clashed in the nearby village of Zayukovo. According to Valery Khatazhukov, the head of the KBR's Human Rights Centre, about 40 people were detained.

The conflict in Kendelen originated from the old disagreement between Kabardians and Balkars in evaluating the historical significance of the Kanjali Battle.

According to Adam Medaliev, a member of the POC, 25 detainees are still kept at the temporary isolation facility (known as the IVS).

POC members have talked with the detainees. "They had no complaints about custody conditions; we saw no traces of beating," said Medaliev.

Tembolat Karaf, a Facebook user, wrote in the page of the group "Human Rights in the KBR" that in total 120 people were detained: 115 Kabardians, three Balkars and two Karachais.
