In 2017, in Kabardino-Balkaria, number of victims to armed conflict decreased by 93%
Last year, in the territory of Kabardino-Balkaria, one person fell victim of the ongoing armed conflict: he was killed. The number of victims fell by 93% as compared to 2016, when the number of killed and wounded people had amounted to 15. These are the results of the calculations run by the "Caucasian Knot" based on its own materials and information from other open sources.
As a rule, the main indicator of the intensity of an armed conflict is the number of victims killed and wounded people during armed clashes and armed incidents, as well as bombings and terror acts. However, the very number of such cases is no less important and informative. The "Caucasian Knot" provides information on the number of armed incidents, terror acts and explosions in 2017 as compared to statistics of similar incidents in 2016.
Armed incidents
January-December 2017
During 12 months of 2017, one armed incident occurred in Kabardino-Balkaria, and one person fell victim to it: he was killed.
The "Caucasian Knot" notes: the statistics on members of the armed underground mentions those who were declared as such by the law enforcement bodies.
January-December 2016
According to the "Caucasian Knot", in the period from January to December 2016, in Kabardino-Balkaria, seven armed incidents were registered, to which 14 people fell victim. Of them, 13 were killed, and another was injured.
11 suspected militants and 2 law enforcers were killed, and a law enforcer was wounded.
Thus, it can be concluded that in 2016, the number of armed incidents in the region decreased by 86% as compared to the previous year and the number of casualties in those incidents reduced by 93%.
Bombings and terror acts
January-December 2017
In January-December 2017, terror acts or bombings were registered in the territory of Kabardino-Balkaria.
January-December 2016
During 2016, an explosion was reported in Kabardino-Balkaria, as a result of which a suspected militant was killed. No terror acts in the territory of the republic were reported.
Thus, it can be concluded that the practice of bombings in the republic in 2017 was stopped.
Results of the year: the tendency to the decrease in the number of victims gained a significant pace.
In total, according to the "Caucasian Knot", in 2017, in Kabardino-Balkaria, one person fell victim to the armed conflict: he was killed.
The killed person was a suspected militant. No information about killed and wounded law enforcers or civilians was reported.
In 2017, as compared to 2016, the total number of victims among suspected militants decreased significantly by 92%. No casualties among law enforcers were reported. As for civilians, no information about victims among them comes for two years. For the last time, a civilian fell victim in 2015.
Last year, as compared to 2016, the total number of victims in the region fell by 93%. The death toll decreased by almost 93%. No wounded were reported at all.
Following the above information, it can be concluded that in 2017, the tendency towards a decrease in the number of armed incidents and their victims in Kabardino-Balkaria which had been monitored by the "Caucasian Knot" in recent years, was most clear. The specific feature of 2017 was the fact that for almost a year, from January to December 15, no armed incidents, and, accordingly, no victims were registered at all. Besides, bombings were stopped, whereas in 2016, the first such incident was registered over two years.
It should be realized that the provided statistics cannot reflect with the 100 percent accuracy the number of victims for each of the categories highlighted in the review. Not all information is included in the news reports. It is not always possible to check the reliability of the statements voiced by the law enforcement bodies and to reveal involvement of members of the armed underground in certain crimes.
In 2015, according to the calculations run by the "Caucasian Knot", 48 people fell victim to the armed conflict in the republic. Of them, 47 were killed and another was injured. In 2014, in the republic, 66 people fell victim to the armed conflict. Of them, at least 49 were killed and 17 others were wounded. In 2013, at least 123 people fell victim in the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR). Of them, 92 people were killed and at least 31 others were wounded. In 2012, 156 people fell victim to the armed conflict, including 107 killed and 49 injured, whereas in 2011, 173 people fell victim to the conflict, including 129 killed and 44 injured. Meanwhile, in 2010, in Kabardino-Balkaria, the number of victims to the armed conflict reached 161, including 79 killed and 82 wounded.
