In 2017, in Dagestan, number of victims to armed conflict decreased by 73%

In 2017, at least 55 people fell victim to the armed conflict in Dagestan. The main losses were suffered by militants again, like in 2016. Over the year, the number of victims among law enforcers and civilians has drastically reduced. The total number of victims compared with 2016 decreased by 73%. These are the results of the calculations run by the "Caucasian Knot" based on its own materials and information from other open sources.

As a rule, the main indicator of the intensity of an armed conflict is the number of victims killed and wounded people during armed clashes and armed incidents, as well as bombings and terror acts. However, the very number of such cases is no less important and informative.

The "Caucasian Knot" provides the information on the number of armed incidents, terror acts, and bombings in the regions of the North-Caucasian Federal District (NCFD) in 2017 compared with the number of similar incidents in 2016.

Armed incidents

January-December 2017

In 2017, in Dagestan, 24 armed incidents were registered, to which 51 people fell victim, including 44 killed and 7 wounded.

The death toll included 38 suspected militants, 5 law enforcers, and a civilian. The number of the wounded included 5 law enforcers, a civilian, and a militant.

January-December 2016

In 2016, in Dagestan, 64 armed incidents were registered, to which 171 people fell victim, including 126 killed and 45 wounded.

The death toll included 105 suspected members of illegal armed formations (IAFs), 19 law enforcers, and 2 civilians. 41 law enforcers, 2 civilians, and 2 militants were wounded.

Thus, in 2017, in Dagestan, the number of armed incidents decreased by 62.5% as compared to 2016, while the number of victims decreased by 70%.

Bombings and terror acts

January-December 2017

In 2017, six explosions took place in Dagestan, including one terror act. Three people fell victim, including two killed and one wounded. The death toll included two civilians. Another civilian was wounded.

An attack on the house of a policeman in Amet-Khan Sultan Avenue committed on June 19 was classified as a terror act. Then an unidentified person threw three grenades and a note with threats into a yard of the household and fled. Two grenades exploded. No one suffered.

January-December 2016

In 2016, 13 explosions took place in Dagestan, including one terror act. 26 people fell victim, including 10 killed and 16 injured. Of them, 7 militants and 3 law enforcers were killed and 10 law enforcers and 6 civilians injured.

In total, in 2017, the number of bombings in the republic decreased by almost 54% compared with 2017, while the number of terror act remained the same. In 2017, the number of victims to explosions and terror acts decreased by more than 88% as compared to 2016.

Militants comprised almost 81% of death toll in 2017

In total, according to the "Caucasian Knot", in 2017, in Dagestan, 55 people fell victim to the armed conflict. Of them, 47 people were killed and 8 others were wounded.

In comparison with 2016, in 2017, in Dagestan, the number of civilians who fell victim to the armed conflict decreased by almost 63%, while the number of victims among militants decreased by almost 66%. The number of victims among law enforcers has drastically reduced by 86%.
