In Sochi, a call to commemorate victims of repression turns into a threat of prosecution

On October 30, the leader of the "Yabloko" Party branch called on Sochi residents to pay tribute to the memory of the people who fell victim to political repression. In response, a policeman handed over to her a warning about the inadmissibility of holding unsanctioned mass actions.

According to Irene Ilyenkova, on October 29, on her Facebook, she invited caring Sochi residents to pay tribute to the memory of the victims of political repressions.

"Only for reposts on the Internet, about 500 cases have been initiated. And that's stupid to pretend that nothing special is happening," wrote the activist in her post.

"I explained to the policeman that it is absurd to notify the authorities that people want to go to the cemetery and pay tribute to the memory of the deceased victims ... I interpreted the 'warning' as a threat of illegal political persecution," Irene Ilyenkova noted.

The Sochi authorities do not believe that laying flowers at the monument to victims of political repression should be sanctioned by the Mayoralty.

Advocate Mikhail Okhrimenko also believes the warning was issued illegally.
