Krasnodar exhibition highlights problems faced by veterans of Chechen wars

The exhibition "Realism" of video works by Polish film director Artur Żmijewski has been opened in Krasnodar. Heroes of the videos are soldiers who became disabled during the wars in Chechnya.

On November 9, the exhibition was opened at the "Typography" Centre for Contemporary Art. Six large-format black-and-white videos projected onto the wall were presented to visitors of the exhibition. Each of the video is dedicated to one person. All of them are men who became disabled during the Chechen war. It is not specified on which side those people were fighting, and their names are not mentioned.

The videos were shot by Artur Żmijewski himself in Moscow in 2017, especially for the "Documenta14", a well-known international exhibition of contemporary art, held once every five years in the German city of Kassel. Each of the Artur Żmijewski's heroes is shown in ordinary life on the street or at home. Then they take off their clothes and try to do physical exercises, take off their prostheses and demonstrate parts of their bodies that had undergone partial amputation, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.

The works of the film director raise the problem faced by people with disabilities and contribute to a change in attitude towards them, note visitors of the exhibition.
