Azerbaijan: arrest of persons accused of financing PFPA extended until March

The Baku court has extended until March 7 the arrest of the activists of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), namely, of Babek Gasanov, Agil Magerramov, Ruslan Nasirli, Salekh Rustamov and Vidadi Rustamli, accused of illegally sponsoring the PFPA.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Agil Magerramov, a member of the Presidium of the PFPA, Ruslan Nasirli, the chairman of the Youth Committee's Majlis of the PFPA, and Babek Gasanov, the head of the PFPA's regional organization, were detained on May 25, three days before the rally to mark the 100th anniversary of the Azerbaijani Republic.

Law enforcers have accused the PFPA activists, including Salekh Rustamov, a Russian citizen, and Vidadi Rustamli, detained on May 9 and 10, of money laundering.

Nasirli and Magerramov are deprived of meetings with relatives and telephone conversations, their advocates have reported. They intend to appeal against the arrest extension.

The rights of the arrested PFPA activists are grossly violated, said Elshan Gasanov, the head of the Centre for Monitoring Political Prisoners.
