Suspected attacker on Budyonnovsk detained
In Moscow, law enforcers have detained Khazvakha Cherkhigov, suspected of involvement in the militant attack on Budyonnovsk in 1995.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 14, 1995, a unit of militants from Chechnya headed by Shamil Basaev seized the central hospital in Budyonnovsk. As a result of the terror act, 129 people were killed. After the talks held on June 19, 1995, the militants set free the remaining hostages, and the Russian authorities agreed to stop the combat actions in Chechnya and let the militants leave.
On November 19, FSB agents detained 40-year-old Khazvakha Cherkhigov, reports the FSB on its website.
In the period from 1995 to 2013, the Stavropol Territorial Court found 31 people guilty of the attack on Budyonnovsk and sentenced them to various terms of imprisonment. According to investigators, other 18 members of the Shamil Basaev's unit are already dead, the FSB reports.
It should be noted that the sentences in the case on the attack on Budyonnovsk were also pronounced after 2013. So, in October 2017, the North-Caucasian District Military Court sentenced Chechen natives Ramzan Belyalov and Magomed Mazdaev to 15 and 13 years of imprisonment in a penal colony, respectively, and on June 14, 2018, Badrudi Daudov, a native of the Nozhai-Yurt District in Chechnya, was sentenced to 14 years of imprisonment.
