Local residents express skepticism about construction of a new large mosque in Grozny
Construction of a new mosque, designed for 5000, has been started in the capital of Chechnya. The residents of Grozny interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot" do not see the need to build a large mosque at the entrance to the city. They believe it will not be completely filled with believers.
The decision to build a new large mosque in Grozny was made by Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov on November 28. The city administration reported that the funds for the mosque construction were allocated by the public fund named after Akhmat-Khadji Kadyrov.
The Spiritual Administration of Muslims (SAM) of Chechnya called the construction of a new mosque as necessary.
However, Grozny residents criticized the construction of such a large mosque at the entrance to the city.
"I cannot understand why it is necessary to build such huge buildings if people do not go there?" Usam asked.
Local resident Salavdi noted that the announcement of the construction of a mosque in Grozny reminded him of the predictions of Chechen saints, which his ancestors had told him about. "My grandparents told me that many beautiful and richly decorated mosques will appear in Chechnya, but people will not go to them," he said.
In 2008, the mosque "Heart of Chechnya" named after Akhmat Kadyrov, one of the largest mosques in Europe, designed for 10,000 was opened in Grozny.
