ECtHR's Grand Chamber finds Zara Murtazalieva's trial to be fair

The appellate instance of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) – the Grand Chamber – has reviewed the case of a Chechen native, Zara Murtazalieva, on her initiative, but refused to recognize the violation of her right to a fair trial.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in 2017, the ECtHR refused to satisfy the complaint of a Zara Murtazalieva, a Chechen native, about the violation in Russia of her right to a fair trial and her defence in court. Her defence appealed against that ECtHR's decision, and the case was sent for review by the Grand Chamber – the appellate instance of the ECtHR.

On January 17, 2005, the Moscow City Court found Zara Murtazalieva guilty of preparing a terror act in Moscow and sentenced her to 9 years in prison. The Supreme Court of Russia reduced her prison term to 8.5 years. In 2008, the court refused to apply CER (conditional early relief) to Murtazalieva, since she refused to plead guilty. She was released on September 3, 2012.

The Grand Chamber of the ECtHR has rejected Zara Murtazalieva's complaint about the unfair trial in Russia. The decision is dated today and posted on the ECtHR's website.
