Gazprom refuses to forgive multibillion debts to residents of Chechnya

Today, the supplier of natural gas to Chechnya has announced its intent to appeal against the court judgement that obliges the company to write off the consumers' debts, which are "hopeless to collect".

The "Caucasian Knot" has informed that on January 16, the Chechnya's Prosecutor's Office reported that the Zavodskoy District Court of Grozny had satisfied the lawsuit in which the Office demanded from the "Gazprom Mezhregiongaz Grozny" Company to write off the populations' debts "hopeless to collect" – over nine billion roubles.

The time limitation for collecting the debts has expired, while mass demands of gas company officials to claim the debts "created social tensions in the society and could lead to people's protest actions," the Prosecutor's Office has explained.

The judgement to write off multibillion-rouble debts in Chechnya will be appealed against the spokesman for the "Gazprom-Mezhregiongaz" Company has stated.

According to his story, the company has not submitted any documents to the court evidencing that the debts are "hopeless to recover", the "Interfax" writes today.
