Court upholds verdict to Saakashvili on abuse of power

The cassation instance has upheld the verdict passed to the former Georgian president, Mikhail Saakashvili, sentenced to three years in prison within the case of abuse of power when pardoning the convicts sentenced for killing a businessman.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on January 5, 2018, the Tbilisi City Court found Mikhail Saakashvili guilty of abuse of power in pardoning convicts in the case of the murder of the businessman Sandro Girgvliani and sentenced him to three years in prison.

The Supreme Court (SC) of Georgia has upheld the verdict to Saakashvili in the case of the death of Sandro Girgvliani, the press service of the General Prosecutor's Office (GPO) of Georgia has informed.

"According to the decision of the Georgia's SC of May 21, 2019, the cassation appeal of the former President of Georgia, Mikhail Saakashvili, and his advocate regarding the decision of the Tbilisi Appeal Court of July 18, 2018, has been dismissed," the TASS quotes the GPO's statement.

Let us remind you that in June 2018, a court in Tbilisi also sentenced Saakashvili in the case of beating the MP Valery Gelashvili in 2005. Within this case, Saakashvili was sentenced in absentia to six years in prison.
