Court reduces Ingush elder Akhmed Barakhoev's arrest
The Supreme Court (SC) of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR) has reduced the arrest of the Ingush elder, Ahmed Barakhoev, from three to two months.
On March 26, 2019, residents of Ingushetia extended, without authorities' sanction, the rally in Magas, which led to clashes with law enforcers. Three leaders of Ingush protests – Akhmed Barakhoev, Musa Malsagov and Barakh Chemurziev – were arrested within a criminal case on calls for riots and use violence against an official representative of the authorities. Within the case of attacking policemen, Malsag Uzhakhov, the head of the Ingush Council of Teips (family clans), and Ismail Nalgiev, the coordinator of the organization "Choice of Ingushetia", were also arrested.
Besides, the court has cancelled the decision to bring Malsag Uzhakhov to administrative responsibility for participation in the last October protests in the city of Magas.
The Human Rights Centre "Memorial" has announced Malsag Uzhakhov and four other leaders of the March protests in Magas to be political prisoners.
About 100 supporters of Uzhakhov gathered in the courtroom. They have treated the judgement as the "first victory." Djabrail Kuriev, an advocate, said that the judgement would be a precedent.
