Court transfers Dagestan advocate Abumuslimov under house arrest

The court has appointed house arrest to Arslanali Abumuslimov, the chairman of the Dagestani Bar Association named "Apellant", who is suspected of a fraud.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on July 1, Abumuslimov's colleagues reported his detention in Makhachkala.

Abumuslimov's advocate has linked the criminal prosecution of his client with the fact that he was involved as an advocate in a number of high-profile cases. Thus, Abumuslimov represented the interests of the former Mayor of Izberbash Abdulmedjid Suleimanov, suspected of exceeding of abuse of power. According to the "Chernovik" (Draft) weekly, Abumuslimov had earlier represented the interests of Shamil Kadiev, the head of the Directorate of Customer-Developer in a bribe case. He also works with Abdusamad Gamidov, a former Dagestani Prime Minister in the case of embezzling 40 million roubles from the state budget.

"The Dagestani Bar Association and over a hundred lawyers have sent their guarantees for Abumuslimov to the court, assuring that he will properly fulfil all the restrictions," said Askhabali Salimov, an advocate, adding that investigators suspect Abumuslimov of a fraud, allegedly committed in 2013.

"Now, Abumuslimov has become unwanted and inconvenient; therefore a criminal case is being initiated against him," Mr Salimov has suggested.
