Court leaves Ingush activist Malsag Uzhakhov in custody

The Supreme Court (SC) of Kabardino-Balkaria refused to grant an appeal filed against the arrest of Malsag Uzhakhov, the chairman of the Ingush Council of Teips (family clans), who was accused of calling for riots and attacks on law enforcers.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Malsag Uzhakhov was arrested after attending the March rally in Magas, and his detention in custody was extended until September 25. On July 2, the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial" recognized Malsag Uzhakhov and four other leaders of the protests as political prisoners.

The appeal stated that the court did not provide sufficient grounds for the arrest of Malsag Uzhakhov, emphasized advocate Djabrail Kuriev. The defence intends to continue seeking the release of the activist.

According to the advocate, Malsag Uzhakhov does not understand what he is accused of.

Earlier, on July 3, the Supreme Court of Ingushetia cancelled the decision on bringing Malsag Uzhakhov to responsibility for participation in the October protests in Magas.
