Law enforcers detain protesters in Ganja

On July 16, at a protest action, mothers of the men, arrested in the "Ganja case", demanded to release their sons and investigate their complaints of torture. Law enforcers stopped the protest action and detained the protestors, but soon set them free.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 7, in Baku, a protest action held by relatives of the men arrested in the "Ganja case" was dispersed by the police. Policemen also detained several protesters and journalists. Most of the people arrested in the "Ganja case" were not involved in the events, and their confessions were got under torture, reported the "Committee against Repression and Torture".

On July 3, 2018, there was an assassination attempt on Elmar Veliev, the head of the Ganja administration. Yunis Safarov, a 35-year-old native of Ganja, was detained. On July 10, in Ganja, about 200 people gathered outside the administration building and demanded to investigate the actions of Elmar Veliev. The police dispersed the rally. Two police officers were killed in clashes with the protesters.

On July 16, a group of mothers whose family members were arrested in connection with the July 2018 events tried to hold a protest action in the main square of the city of Ganja with the demand for justice to their sons, the news agency "Turan" reports.

The mothers of the arrested men believe that their sons are not guilty and the charges are fabricated. They demand to conduct the investigation into the complaints of torture used against their sons, the objective trial, and the release of the arrested men, the "Turan" reports.

The police detained the participants of the protest action, and they were taken to the Nizami district police department of Ganja and set free after some time, reported the "Meydan.tv" on its website on July 16.
