Arrest of Dagestani journalist Gadjiev extended until mid-September

A court in Makhachkala has extended the arrest of the journalist, Abdulmumin Gadjiev, accused of financing terrorism, for another month. He has treated the prosecutors' arguments as stated his readiness to cooperate with investigators.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 18, 2019, Abdulmumin Gadjiev, the editor of the religion section of the Dagestani "Chernovik" (Draft) weekly, was arrested under the case of financing terrorism.

Magdi Kamalov, the founder of the weekly, is sure that Gadjiev was persecuted because of his articles on Islamic topics.

The court has extended Gadjiev's arrest until September 13. The prosecutor, Magomed Ibragimov, said that Gadjiev could escape, since he had repeatedly travelled abroad to raise funds.

Gadjiev's defence has treated the prosecutor's arguments in favour of extending the arrest as unjustified. The investigator has failed to prove why a milder measure of freedom restraint could not be applied to Gadjiev, said Shamil Magomedov, an advocate.

Zagidat Gadjieva, Abdulmumin's mother, was only once allowed to visit his son at the SIZO (pre-trial prison).
