South Ossetia announces temporary closure of its border with Georgia
In the period from the evening on August 25 to the morning on August 27, checkpoints on the border with Georgia will suspend operation in connection with the celebration of the anniversary of the recognition of the country's independence, the KGB of South Ossetia announces today. The South Ossetian Ministry of Culture announced the programme of the holiday.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that South Ossetia operates four checkpoints of simplified border crossing with Georgia, and they are used by residents of the border villages of South Ossetia, such as Khelchua, Sinagur, Karzman, as well as settlements of the Leningor District. South Ossetia regularly closes the border with Georgia on various occasions.
In connection with the celebration of the recognition of the South Ossetia's independence, the checkpoints on the border with Georgia will be closed starting from 8:00 p.m. August 25 till 6:00 a.m. on August 27, reports today the KGB of South Ossetia on its Facebook page.
Residents of South Ossetia will have a long weekend, since the day of August 26, when Russia recognized the independence of South Ossetia, falls on Monday. According to Zhanna Zaseeva, South Ossetian Minister of Culture, exhibitions, concerts, youth actions, and a solemn meeting will be held to celebrate the holiday, the South Ossetian news agency "Res" reports today.
